Iran

Iran was visited several times starting from 1992, whereby wide areas of the country (Ardabil - Mashhad, Tehran - Bam) were traveled. Mazandaran and Gilan Provinces, south of the Caspian Sea, have been intensively toured (1995) as part of a research project on Timurid woodwork.

Further trips to Iran took place in 1994, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2016 and 2019.

Historical photographs of Iran in the 1970s taken on a journey from Germany to Afghanistan in 1970 (private archive W.B. 1934-2012) can be seen here

For centuries, the country was known under its name Persia, until it was renamed in 1935 under Reza Shah Pahlavi (Reza Chan, 1878-1944) in Iran. His son Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi (1919-1980) ruled until the Islamic Revolution in 1979 when Ruhollah Musawi Khomeini (Khomeni, 1902-1989) took over power.
